In this episode, we interview Creative Director Tim Wenzel of Stumptown Coffee Roasters. Wenzel has been with Stumptown for 18 years and wrote and directed Breaking The Crust, a musical short film celebrating skateboard culture. It also introduces the world to the Stumptown Coffee Skate Team.

In this episode, Elizabeth Chai interviews Dakota Graff of Onyx Coffee Lab and Joe Marocco of Mill City Coffee Roasters.

Joe Marocco works for MIll City Roasters in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Marocco is the Coffee Educator at Mill City, a roasting machine distributor and SCA Premiere Training Campus, and they brought a full roasting and coffee lab to Kansas City in the back of a semi-truck and was home to the roasters for the US Roasting Championship. 

Graff competed in the 2019 US Coffee In Good Spirits Championship. This marks the first year of this program in the United States. The cocktail and coffee competition has been a World Coffee Events program since 2011.

In this special Sprudge Live episode, Multimedia Director Elizabeth Chai interviews folks on the floor at the US Coffee Qualifiers in Nashville, Tennessee. 

In this episode, Chai talks to barista competitor Anthony Ragler of Counter Culture Coffee. Ragler placed 10th in the competition and will advance to the national stage in Kansas City. In the interview, Ragler discusses training at the Glitter Cat Barista Bootcamp.

Chai also interviews Chelsea Walker Watson of Atlas Coffee Importers in Seattle, Washington. Watson competed in the Brewers Cup, placing ninth and will advance to the national competition in March.

On a very special edition of the Coffee Sprudgecast, we take you live to the event floor at the 2019 US Coffee Champs Qualifying Event in Denver, Colorado! There we join multimedia director Elizabeth Chai, who—in addition to helming our must-follow Instagram coverage of the event—taped a series of original interviews for this week’s episode of the podcast.

In this episode, Chai talks to Julia Peixoto of Peixoto Coffee Roastersin Chandler, Arizona. Peixoto competed in the 2019 US Brewers Cup Qualifiers using coffee grown on their family farm in Brazil.

Chai also chats with Miguel Vicuña and Rita Kaminsky of Sweet Bloom Coffeein Lakewood, Colorado and Snowdrift Coffeein Roscoe, Illinois, respectively. Along with judging USBC and WCE events for a decade, Vicuña is the current Chair of the USCC (United States Coffee Championship) Working Group. Kaminsky is the U.S. Coffee Champ committee chair for the Coffee in Good Spirits.

On a very special edition of the Coffee Sprudgecast, we take you live to the event floor at the 2019 US Coffee Champs Qualifying Event in Denver, Colorado! There we join multimedia director Elizabeth Chai, who—in addition to helming our must-follow Instagram coverage of the event—taped a series of original interviews for this week’s episode of the podcast.

In this episode Chai talks to Blair Smith, a Brewers Cup competitor for Augie’s Coffee in California’s Inland Empire region. Smith placed 9th overall in the qualifying event, earning a bid to move on and compete at the 2019 US Coffee Championships national event next March in Boston.

Chai also sat down with Hana Kaneshige, a barista competitor and Regional Educator representing Counter Culture Coffee, a wholesale roaster hubbed in Durham, North Carolina and Emeryville, CA with satellite training centers nationwide. Kaneshige would also place ninth in the US Coffee Champs Barista Competition field, earning a coveted spot to move on and compete at nationals next year in Boston.

Hosted by Michelle Johnson, produced by Sprudge, and featuring NYC co-hosts Tymika Lawrence (Atlas Coffee) and Ezra Baker (Oren’s Coffee Co.) and DC co-host Adam JacksonBey (The Potter’s House, Barista Guild of America Executive Council), these events centered the voices and experiences of Black coffee professionals and enthusiasts alike, all with unique perspectives that spanned intersectional identities and roles on the retail end of the value chain.
